Who’s Holding You Back From Your Potential?

Are you feeling lost, discouraged, or overwhelmed? Do you find yourself constantly struggling to move forward, even when you know you have so much potential and purpose?

Well, you’re not alone.

Today, I want to share a portion of scripture that has been on my heart recently, and offer some insights that might be helpful for you. We’re looking at Matthew 2:13, where an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and warns him to flee to Egypt with his family because Herod is searching for the child to destroy him. Herod was threatened by the potential of another up-and-coming leader, and his jealousy and insecurity led him to massacre thousands of children.

The thing that strikes me about this story is that Christ posed no direct threat to Herod as a baby. It was his potential that caused Herod to behave so destructively. We can see this pattern in other parts of scripture too, like when Saul held a spear to David or when other leaders wanted to extinguish Joseph, David, or Christ.

So,.. what are the “Herods” in our lives?

Who or what threatens our potential, stifles our progress, or holds us back?

It could be a person who speaks negatively over us, a toxic relationship that drains us, or even our own limiting beliefs and insecurities. Sometimes, the voice of Herod can be very subtle, and we may not recognize it until it’s too late.

It is up to us to take control of our lives and not let the “Herods” in our lives dictate our destiny.

Here is the good news:

We don’t have to be powerless against the Herods in our lives. We can recognize the pattern when it occurs, and we can have the courage and wisdom to avoid these people if possible. We can also be very selective about who we allow to speak into our lives and make sure they have our best interests at heart.

Most importantly, we need to own our own destiny, regardless of the responses of others. We can’t look to others to validate our decisions or actions. Instead, we need to tune into spiritual guidance from the Father and ask for wisdom and discernment. We need to stay focused on our calling, our potential, and our purpose, and not let the Herods in our lives extinguish our light.
